GreenNight. April 1st. Riga.

On the 1st of April Riga is to witness a global gathering of homegrown talents and foreign affairs sharing their experience and creative input to showcase a concept that will stir up the whole of Latvian urban club culture.

April 1st. April Fool’s Day. Czech Easter. Call it whatever you like but a day of subtleness. The Green Thursday of 2010 marks an opening night planned to stirr things up in Latvian urban club culture.
“GreenNight: THE OPENING” will take place in the heart of Riga – the building beside the Museum of Nature facing the Latvian Music Academy, right where the infamous house of everything trendy stood – the Palazzo Italia shopping mall. The joint will be graced by the might of London’s hype, a fresh breeze from across the Atlantic, the evergreen spice of Ibiza and the hot groove of Riga’s own, featuring cutting-edge installations for the pleasure of the eye and another level of social interaction!
“GreenNight: THE OPENING” is curated by Propeller Productions in conjunction with disc jockey and record label chief Bogdan Taran and staged for the eye by multimedia artists Artis Dzērve and Pēteris Ripa of whom the first has just landed in Riga far from his home in exile – a lonely island in Venezuela – ready to take a fresh look at the urban culture scene of his hometown. “GreenNight: THE OPENING” will feature musical content that is yet to grace the ears of the mainstream in Riga but has already blinded both the critics and the masses on both coasts of the Atlantic – the Dutch born citizen of Washington in the US of A who calls himself simply MARTYN. His production work gets out on Warp, Tectonic, Tempa, Revolver, his own imprint 3024 and many more; as soon as it’s out his material at most times gets instantly picked up by such greats as Gilles Peterson, Mr. Scruff, Laurent Garnier, Ame, Skream, Kode9, Flying Lotus, The Bug, Pole and even the likes of Underground Resistance! As a DJ Martyn has graced illustrous venues such as Berghain, Fabric, Plastic People, The End, Cielo, Club Love and now Riga is to witness his blend of techno-dubstep-house-whatever. Oh, and be sure to check his genius on Fabric mix series number 50 for a taste of what’s to come!
Another diverse surprise to grace the decks is the man BBC 1Xtra’s Mary Anne Hobbs dubbed “one of the most exquisite producers in the game at the moment”. His name is UNTOLD. His EP on Hemlock Recordings featuring the bass masterpiece “Stop What You’re Doing” should be on the playlists of every single DJ that wants to rock London. Untold has already remixed such luminaries as The XX, Ke$ha and Jose James. This is the future, London!
As for the line-up of local talent none can wish for one more diverse and saturated. Besides Bogdan Taran himself (Does the head of Amber Muse Records and a sought-after DJ for more than a decade need an introduction?) GreenNight presents three powerful DJ duos – starting from the superstar combo of Kaspar Kondrat and Roland Privert to the dynamic expertise of the hottest two around – AI-VA and RUDD (the duo embark on a US tour just days after GreenNight, imagine that!) and the most groundbreaking two around – Elvi Soulsystems & KRII. THE OPENING will also welcome a set by Riga’s house wunderkid Electricano, who rocked Ministry of Sound in London last December.
And what of the Ibiza spice? GreenNight will feature performances of interaction by two of the islands finest performers – Diablo the drag on traditional african drums and Zeles – the electric drum showman who will join the disc jockeys on the night for a live experience Riga has not witnessed yet!

Get a hold of an invitation while you can! Be off somewhere in the city, look for extraordinary occasions, the right people and you may come across one… NOW is the treasure, LATER is your bane!
